A wolf howled.

I pressed my lips together and tried to concentrate on reversing the flow of my magic. It settled on my team, seeping into them as it bolstered their abilities.

Aeric, Wyatt, Shania, East, Jack, and Moira all immediately grew, the magic stretching their frames out and packing even more muscle on them.

Unfortunately, it did nothing to Rio and River, and it had a very tenuous grasp on Forrest and Klancy that slipped if I wasn’t paying attention to it.

I tried to tamp down the twitch of irritation that flashed through me.

I have yet to ever get my magic to stick to Rio. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s been rejecting it out of spite.

I’d been assigned progressively larger groups of wolves to hunt with during the fights, but I had yet to get my magic to stick to the entire group. (Though the spiteful part of me suspected my inability to cast my magic on Rio had something more to do with his attitude than my abilities.)

The team we’d been assigned to fight against flickered at the edge of my eyesight, appearing in the shadows cast by the bright moonlight on the snow covered ground.

Moira took out the first wolf from the opposing team, tossing him aside like he was a rag doll and not a full-grown wolf.

Aeric and Wyatt drove three wolves between the two of them, herding them away from our base.

I raised my daggers, preparing for the opposing team—which was about double the size of mine—to break our frontlines.

I felt Klancy slip from my magic, and I clenched my teeth as I directed more at him.

It got to him in time that he was able to body slam one wolf and bite at the throat of another, but a third packmate streaked past him—running toward me.

Shania, standing near me, flattened her ears, and something bubbled inside me, so I knew what she was thinking.

“I told you I can’t bring a baseball bat to a fight like this,” I said.

She glanced over at me in surprise—she was so huge from my magic, she didn’t have to look up very much—then shifted her weight to her hindquarters and sprang forward. She intercepted the wolf with a snarl.

Hopping in her footprints, I joined the fight.

I saw a wolf attacking East’s unprotected flank and moved in, kneeing it in the head. When it turned to me, I ruthlessly slashed at its paws with my daggers, and it retreated.

Behind me, East yipped in alarm as my Wolf’s Kiss magic faltered. I threw more magic at my team, then pivoted, finding my next target.

I kicked, sliced, and then cursed whenever I felt my magic slip from me and fall off my team.

It seemed impossible to keep up without my full attention—which I couldn’t give, obviously, when I was attacking a wolf.

I thought this would be something I could multitask, but maybe I’m too inexperienced? I shook my head in irritation as I forcibly threw more of my magic on my team, then
